According to the third annual Coinstar National Currency Poll--A Periodic Look at Americans and Their Money, 79% support the redesigned dollar coin featuring Sacagawea, the Native American woman who guided the 1804-06 expedition of explorers Meriwether Lewis and George Rogers Clark, saying it is distinguishable from the quarter, as well as other coins. However, acceptance varies greatly among age groups. The survey of more than 1,000 adults nationwide revealed that 85% of Americans aged 18-34 agree it is sufficiently different from the Susan B. Anthony coin, compared with 58% aged 65 and older.

While in favor of the dollar coin's new design, subjects offered mixed reviews on how much they plan to use it rather than the dollar bill. Forty-seven percent felt the coin will be a convenient way to pay for purchases. Once it is in wider circulation, 25% said they will use it as much or more than the bill, while 69% will likely use the bill more often.

"It is not surprising that most Americans expect to use the dollar bill more often than the dollar coin," notes Dan Gerrity, president and CEO of Coinstar Inc. …
