The PictureTel 900 Series PC platform, a new videoconferencing system available from PictureTel Corporation, allows participants in both long distance and local meetings to conduct presentations, surf the Web, collaborate on documents, send e-mail, and access corporate databases. Users can also plug in their own PC to access, share, and modify content.

Pearson plc has launched Learning Network for K-12, an online destination with resources for parents, teachers, and students, as well as a reference channel and store. The network, the first in a series of education-related portals from Pearson, includes contributions from, Classroom Connect, and, in addition to Pearson Education imprints.

Geared for grades five through twelve, Amazon River Dolphins, part of the Virtual Explorers program, is an interdisciplinary unit that utilizes problem solving, conceptual understanding, and visualization concepts.

The unit reaches its climax November 13-27 with a trip down the Amazon river to research river dolphins. During the two-week expedition, researchers will post data on the dolphins as well as the team's experiences on the river and with people in local villages. Students and teachers can e-mail the explorer team and researchers during the expedition.

Quia Corporation offers users the opportunity to create free, customized online learning activities. Visitors to the company's Web site can create their own learning exercises such as flash cards, puzzles, and games, or they may access games created by other teachers. Quia also allows teachers to create online quizzes and class Web pages.

The National Gallery of Art has launched NGAkids, featuring stories, art activities, and information on the Gallery's collections, along with an animated musical tale. The site also links to family-oriented resources, events, and publications suitable for children of all ages.


Classroom Connect's site, Classroom Today, will feature curricula based on the U.S. presidential election and the 100th NASA shuttle launch. Also available (for a fee) is the latest Quest Interactive Expedition to the Australian Outback. On AustraliaQuest, students will direct a team of scientists and archaeologists as they journey through Aboriginal communities.


Greenwood Electronic Media has announced the launch of American Slavery: A Composite Autobiography, an online, searchable database of first-hand slave narratives collected during the New Deal era. …
