Meridian Data Offers CD Net

Meridian Data recently announced that it has shipped CD Net, a networking product designed specifically for CD-ROM drives.

CD Net enables multiple CD-ROM drives and CD-ROM databases to be integrated into a Local Area Network (LAN). To facilitate integration, CD Net can be configured for Token Ring, Ethernet, and ARCNET. In addition, the product supports Novell and MS NET software.

"The cost of multiple CD-ROM drives and products has proved to be a limiting factor in the marketplace," said Mark Sheldon, vice president of marketing and sales for Meridian Data. "By limiting factor, I mean that companies and organizations carefully select who receives a CD-ROM drive because they can't justify the cost of placing a CD-ROM drive on every person's desk, then supporting those drives."

"CD Net overcomes this obstacle by making information on CD-ROMs available to everyone. The cost/benefit ratio amortizes itself very quickly over a network, encouraging that amounts to mini online systems."

Developed for small to medium size LANs, CD Net features three half height 5-1/4 inch slots, a network board with a 8088 microprocessor, integration/operation software and a power supply integrated into one cabinet. …
