Library Systems Conference Merges with The National Online Meeting

The Conference on Integrated Online Library Systems (IOLS) has merged with the National Online Meeting and will become a "conference within a conference," beginning with the spring 1989 meeting. A complete IOLS program will be organized for May 10 and 11, the second and third day of the National Online Meeting.

IOLS, founded and organized by David C. Genaway, has previously been held in 1983, 1984, and 1986. It was the only conference to focus on online library systems, particularly those systems that integrated more than on library function. In 1986, the scope of the conference was enlarged to include independent and "open" systems that allow stand-alone subsystems, such as commercial acquisitions and serials modules, to link together to create a more comprehensive library system.

"Integrated library systems and online database systems have been traveling along parallel paths since their births in the early 1970s," said Tom Hogan, president of Learned Information, Inc. and organizer of the National Online Meeting. "I believe we are now seeing a convergence of these two fields. In fact, I believe they can be thought of as having the same objective--serving the user with as complete and integrated array of information services as possible."

"We thought a merger of IOLS and the National Online Meeting made sense for a number of reasons," Hogan continued, "not the least of which is the feeling of many information professionals that too many conferences make it impossible to keep up with important advances in all their various fields of interest. There are a lot of things going on in the library field--that's obvious. As conference organizers, it's our responsibility to include as many of these things as we can in our portfolio of activities."

IOLS '89 will consist of plenary sessions, technical papers, and product reviews from leading system providers. …
