NISO Will Develop Image Metadata Standard, Z39.50 National Standard

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has announced that a NISO Standards Committee has been appointed to develop a national standard for technical metadata describing digitized still images. NISO has also announced the establishment of a new standards committee to draft a National Z39.50 Profile for library applications.

Image Metadata Standard

This work grows out of the 1999 international workshop sponsored by NISO, Research Libraries Group (RLG), and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) that confirmed there's little consistency in the technical metadata (such as information on the image-capture process and technical characteristics of the digital images) that accompany digitized still images. This information is important to managing and ensuring the longevity of large collections of digitized images. Having this metadata standard in place will support the development of tools to validate, manage, migrate, and process images of enduring value.
