A conversation with religious-right fixture and Lambda Report publisher Peter LaBarbera

For the past 10 years, Peter LaBarbera has devoted his life to opposing the "homosexual activist movement." A 38-year-old father of five, LaBarbera is a fixture at gay conferences around the country. He also visits sex clubs and S/M bans in his native Washington, D.C., to gather material for his seven-year,old newsletter, "Lambda Report." The Advocate decided to interview LaBarbera after hearing about a very original theory he had on the notoriously antigay reverend Fred Phelps.

Somebody told me at the gay journalists' convention that you think Fred Phelps is a "gay plant."

Oh, yeah, I said that in jest. Some of us have suspected that [Phelps] is a gay plant because he's such good publicity for your side and such bad for our side. I told one gay activist, "You know, Fred Phelps is our NAMBLA [the North American Man/ Boy Love Association]." I mean, what could be possibly less effective than protesting people at a funeral? You're going to get a lot of converts at somebody's funeral? [Laughs] But we do suspect that some in the media are guilty of elevating Phelps to the level of serious critic and thereby bludgeoning the whole conservative movement with his message, which we reject.

Do you go to gay bars?

Yeah, we've been to gay bars. We went to ... one of the official parties of [the Millennium March on Washington]. And there was sort of an orgy going on in the back room of this bar. …
