Sat Math Scores Reach Record High

The SAT scores of some 1.26 million students entering college this fall indicate they are better prepared in math and science than students of 20 years ago, according to The College Board. the average SAT math score this year is 514 its highest level in 30 years. The board also reported the average SAT verbal score has remained stable at 505 for the fifth consecutive year.

"The rise in math scores is cause for cautious optimism, as is the stability of verbal scores," says College Board President Gaston Caperton. "Verbal scores are holding steady even though more of today's college-bound high school students than ever before have English as their second language or have parents who aren't native English speakers." Since 1987, the number of foreign-born and first-generation American teat takers has increased by 47 percent--nearly three times the growth rate of the entire SAT test-taking population.

This year's SAT takers--whose numbers approximate the size of the freshman class entering four-year colleges in the United States--are also a more diverse group than ever before. …
