IDG Conference Management, the event organizing arm of International Data Corporation, sponsored CD-ROM Expo in Chicago 28-29 September. Record-breaking attendance for a CD-ROM conference to date along with a long list of new products helped create an exciting and enthusiastic event. A total of 2,400 people registered for the conference (500) for just the exhibition (1,375), contributed to the conference as a speaker (100) for exhibit staff (360), or represented the press (69).

According to David Bradway, conference manager for IDG, total attendance increased 44 percent over last year in New York, the first time the event was held. In addition to the two day main conference, which featured Jon Messerschmitt as the inspiring keynote speaker, there were two intense days of workshops and tutorials where industry experts taught small groups of industry newcomers in technical sessions, many of which had been sold out for weeks.

The industries represented at the conference were extracted from IDG's sophisticated computerized attendee tracking system, which gathered data on everyone there, who they represented, and which sessions each person attended. Manufacturing businesses made up the highest group at 17.4 percent, education at 9.5 percent was next, and publishing was third at 8.6 percent. Libraries, software vendors and government employees also showed a strong representation.

The job titles of attendees were also worth noting. General management titles made up 25 percent of all attendees, with marketing and sales next at 18.4 percent. Information systems managers, librarians, consultants, engineers and programmers also had strong showings. …
