A 15-year-old student at an online charter school in Perris, Calif., recently hacked his way into the school's computer, knocking the school off-line for two days and destroying homework assignments, lesson plans and attendance records, according to police and school officials.

The youth, whose name is being withheld because he is a juvenile, did some $18,000 worth of damage and faces possible felony charges and time in juvenile hall, officials say.

"From interviews and the evidence it was pretty clear his intent was to cripple the system," says Riverside County sheriff's Deputy David Cobb. He adds that the youth was apparently out for revenge after getting suspended for an earlier hacking incident.

Choice 2000 On-Line Charter School in Perris is one of more than 300 charter schools in California and one of the few that offers high school education strictly online. The approximately 200 students communicate with teachers and each other from home using personal computers, special software, miniature TV cameras and headsets. …
