Al Pacino will soon start shooting The Gold Coast, based on the 1990 novel by the hugely popular Nelson DeMille. And Jeffrey Deaver--himself no stranger to bestseller lists--has an early thriller, Manhattan Is My Beat, headed for the big screen.

James Ellroy doesn't sell as well as Deaver and DeMille, but he makes up for it with real literary credibility. The California crime writer has two books headed for theaters: White Jazz, the follow-up to L.A. Confidential that will star Nick Nolte, and My Dark Places. The latter is Ellroy's first foray into nonfiction, a 1996 book that tells the story of his own mother's murder.

Speaking of Nolte, Merchant Ivory's long-delayed adaptation of Henry James' The Golden Bowl (starring Nolte, Uma Thurman and Anjelica Huston) should be screening soon.

Although Edward Norton was lined up for the part. Irish hooligan Colin Ferrell (Tigerland) has taken the lead role in Hart's War, an upcoming film based on John Katzenbach's WWII novel. …
