Egg.com Grabs Number One Slot from Business and Finance Rivals

Egg.com has reclaimed the number one spot in MMXI Europe's business and finance category from its bricks and mortar rivals Lloyds TSB.com and Barclays.co.uk. In August, the Barclay'.com site moved up from third to first position, relegating Egg.com, which had occupied the top slot since the beginning of the year. This has sparked a fierce battle between the top three brands, pitching them in a three-way race to increase their presence by reaching greater percentages of the at-home online population in the UK.

Despite some jostling for position in the lower rankings, all the business and finance sites are still UK based. Those dropping out of the top ten between August and November of this year include Halifaxonline.co.uk and the site representing The Royal Bank Of Scotland, RBOS.co.uk. These have been replaced by NatWest.com and Smile.co.uk, the online banking service from the Co-operative Bank, which returns to the top ten listing after an absence of seven months.

Competition in the entertainment category is slightly less intense as the sector has largely been dominated by one site, Virgin.net, with the only challenge to its stay at number one coming in August 2000 when the Big Brother phenomenon captured the nation's attention.

Interest in the TV show had a knock-on effect for UK web users as they logged on to Bigbrother. …
