The University of Illinois at Urbana--Champaign has announced that Dan Schiller will join its faculty in July 2001 with a joint appointment to the Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the Institute of Communications Research. His research centers on telecommunications history, and on the role of cultural production in the socioeconomic development of the market system.

Schiller is currently a professor of communication at the University of California--San Diego. He is also the author of four books--the most recent of which is Digital Capitalism: Networking the Global Market System--as well as many articles.

Schiller holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, an M.A. from The Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Factiva has announced three additions to its senior management team.

As chief technology officer, Harry Tankin will oversee all technology aspects of product development and operation, including the overall technical direction for services and platforms, integration products, and third-party technology/business relationships.

Serving as vice president and director of global marketing, Patricia Sabosik will be responsible for the company's marketing strategy and the positioning of its products and services in the global information marketplace. According to the release, her previous work as executive vice president of Elsevier Science's Electronic Publishing Division has provided her with expertise in global product development, marketing and distribution alliances, technology partnerships, and acquisitions.

In his position as vice president and director of global sales, Clay Cocalis and his staff will be responsible for offering the company's Web services and a range of content-integration solutions to companies worldwide. Prior to this appointment, Cocalis served as director of sales for Dow Jones (Americas), where he also held sales and management positions for more than 16 years.

OCLC has announced that Jane N. Ryland was elected to the OCLC board of trustees at its meeting last November.

Ryland is a membership consultant for Internet2 and a higher education technology consultant. Until 1998, she was president of CAUSE, the association for managing and using information resources in higher education. Prior to that, she held positions in business and higher education at several organizations, including Reference Technology, Inc.; Virginia Community College System; Virginia Tech; and IBM Corp. She has also served on the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Learning and Communications Technologies, the Coalition for Networked Information Steering Committee, and the CAUSE board of directors. Currently, she is a member of the COLLEGIS board of directors and the Eduprise Advisory Board.

Ryland holds a B.A. in English from the Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and a master's degree of public administration in management systems from the University of Colorado.
