I enjoyed the article by Bob Ainsbury and Michelle Futornick ("The Revenge of the Library Scientist," ONLINE, November/December 2000). As an employee of AltaVista and a librarian by training, I feel that the skills I learned in library school have been easy to transfer in the high-tech industry. With the excitement over the new field of Information Architecture, librarians can make the transition into the word of user interface architecture: ontology/thesaurus development--even search technology research. I have shared my expertise from the library world to help AltaVista from their Web site to their research and I truly believe that I have made a difference.

I feel it is also important for former librarians who are in the high-tech industry to go back to the schools and share what they have learned. I think students in library school value it when someone in a non-traditional setting takes the time to share their experiences, which is something I have done at the University of Illinois and I am open to do for other programs.
