The Thomas Cook Group can trace its roots back to Leicester in 1841 when Thomas Cook took temperance supporters on tours of Egypt and the Bible lands.

The Group is currently owned by: Preussag, Europe's largest tourism company; Westdeutsche Landes-bank, Germany's third-largest bank; and the US-based corporate and hospitality services firm, Carlson Companies.

The main trading activities of the group are as travel agent, bureau de change operator, provider of corporate/commercial foreign exchange services, tour operator, issuer of travellers' cheques and dealer in foreign banknotes.

The group has 1300 authorised representatives in more than 100 countries. Its numerous subsidiary businesses include Thomas Cook Holidays; Club 18-30; and the UK and Ireland travel operation, jmc.

Last November, Thomas Cook sold its financial services arm to Travelex for [pound]440m, ending the group's 126-year association with the sector.

In December 2000 German tour operator C&N Touristic announced plans to buy Thomas Cook Holdings for [pound]550m. The deal would create the second largest travel group in Europe and third largest globally. …
