Working to help people with Down syndrome throughout Mexico.

On this month's cover, we feature two students at La Fundacion John Langdon Down, A.C. Following is a brief description of what this organization and its founder, Professor Sylvia G. Escamilla, do for people with Down syndrome.

La Fundacion John Langdon Down, A.C. (The John Langdon Down Foundation) was founded on April 3, 1972, by Professor Sylvia G. Escamilla. It was the first Mexican institution dedicated to the education and care of children, adolescents, and adults with Down syndrome. The Foundation staff not only care for more than 500 students with Down syndrome, they also support and assist the parents of its students; they research and coordinate work and study programs; they train qualified personnel; and they provide advisory services to other schools and professionals.

Another of the Foundation's functions is as a center of information. Its staff promote and organize national and international events on Down syndrome. For example, in 1981, 1983, and 1987, in Mexico City, the Foundation organized three international Congresses, and in 1997, it held an international symposium, which was attended by the most highly renowned researchers in the field of Down syndrome. …
