* Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was named the best motion picture of the year 2000 by the U.S. Catholic Conference's Office for Film and Broadcasting. The office, which rated 240 movies for Catholic audiences last year, also announced February 7 that Traffic, the thriller about drugs, was its second choice on a list of top ten movies. Both were among the five films nominated five days later for Best Picture Oscar. Joseph A. Galante, chairman of the bishops' communications committee, said the office's top ten--which included Chicken Run and Cast Away--offered uplifting messages.

* State and national organizations of Southern Baptists are planning to defund the Atlanta Baptist Association after the latter decided recently to continue its ties with two congregations known for affirming homosexuals. The Southern Baptist North American Mission Board and the Georgia Baptist Convention took separate actions in reaction to a January 30 vote by the association. Its members defeated a motion to dismiss Oakhurst Baptist Church and Virginia-Highland Baptist Church--two congregations ousted in 1999 by the state convention for their stance of welcoming and affirming gays. Atlanta association officials said their vote did not indicate support for homosexual activity but rather affirmed local church autonomy. …
