A retired theology professor, invited to the first joint meeting of two Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) administrative entities to offer reflections on internal divisions over homosexuality and religious pluralism, suggested that maybe God isn't even listening anymore.

Shirley Guthrie, a former Columbia Theological Seminary professor who said he's been labeled both too conservative and too liberal, gave an earful to the General Assembly Council and the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 20.

"You've got self-righteous people on all sides arguing with other self-righteous people," he said, adding that maybe "God is saying No to what we are and these little trivial debates we're having in the church while hundreds of thousands of people are starving to death."

Perhaps God is saying to Presbyterians, as he did to Israel at times, that "I'm sick and tired of listening to you and I'm not even going to listen what your prayers are anymore--do justice! …
