Dear Readers,

We have been inundated with your e-malls and snail mail asking essentially the same question: Why didn't Al Gore just concede?

What brings this to mind is something we saw on television the other night -- a show hosted by Tom Hanks. It was a solemn docudrama that aired Dec. 7 about the role of the press, both military and civilian, in recording the events of World War II. It was powerful. And it was ironic to watch it late into the evening while closing the final pages of this week's issue.

There is no doubt that today we, the American people, are being subjected again to a war on all fronts. And, yes, while it does not involve the maiming, killing or lost innocence of military conflict, the current political battle is having untold consequences. For, unlike earlier conflicts, no national figure of stature has stepped forward to lead us through the minefield. We are being guided, instead, by lawyers -- all of us made victims of the vanity of one man who refuses to accept every standard by which he lost an election to be president, a post that for 200 years required putting the national interest above pride or personal gain. …
