Dear Readers,

Are you better off today than you were eight years ago? When Ronald Reagan raised that question the answer 20 years ago was a no-brainer. Today it apparently depends on the definition of what "is" is or whether there is "controlling legal authority"

What brings this to mind is, of course, the presidential election. To make reasonable choices, Americans will need to answer Reagan's question and, in so doing, they will brand themselves in as clear a fashion as they did two decades ago as people who care not only about their own personal welfare but also about the character of their nation embodied in the man who would be their political and moral leader, not to mention commander in chief.

Even if one doesn't believe in the ever-changing daily polls as distorted by the press (never mind the political spinsters and hucksters), a valid set of numbers has been discussed and should be considered. That's the volume of people who claim to be undecided voters. …
