Dear Readers,

"All politics is local" said former House speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill. He should have added that it can get dirty as hell in the trenches.

What brings this to mind is the Al Gore delegate who drudged up the George W. Bush so-caned drunk driving charge from 1976. Even though young Bush could have lied or fought the ticket, he didn't. George W. has been open about his younger days' drinking and apologized without being specific. He fixed his life.

Compare that to Gore, who has been accused of heavy pot-smoking even while a congressman. Gore acknowledges he smoked as a youth but that's all. Yet friends say that's a lie and they're willing to swear to it. Gore dodges this issue as swiftly as does the press. Yet it's okay to tout unproved rumors about Bush?

Consider this item: Gore is said to have made phone calls to top news editors a few years back asking that a story be spiked about one of his kids' involvement with illegal drugs and underage drinking. …
