Dear Readers,

Wow! Another year over and the start of the third millennium! But as surely as the sun rises each day, partisan politics will resume in 2001 where it left off in the waning days of 2000.

What brings this to mind is our president-elect, George W. Bush. He won with a mandate from the American people even if the big-city press won't tell you that. But we will -- because it is important to understand that, even though politics can be a rough-and-tumble "sport," the simple truth and basic decency remain important American values.

Too many Democrats are forgetting that.

The Clinton legacy rankles the hell out of most Americans, though he still has his supporters, and the deep divisions between the two parties has served to harden the public's determination to see to it that the people's business is done in the people's houses of government in a bipartisan way.

Bush has a strong hand to play by going directly to the country as often as possible to outline his ideas and tell Americans why something isn't getting through Congress. …
