So you think you understand the Florida election fiasco, do you? Insight Graphics Designer Charles Hazard has mapped out just what happened in the swamps and orange groves of Florida politics during the 36-day interregnum of lawyers as they dashed from counting table to lower court to supreme court and back again in an effort to seize victory from the jaws of pursuing alligators and hovering chads. It's easy to trace the events if you just follow the simple program below:

The Protest

(1) Nov. 14 Gore asks Circuit Court Judge Terry Lewis to extend legal deadline for certification of votes by Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Lewis rejects request, but says Harris must explain standard of discretion.

(2) Nov. 17 Gore appeals the Harris certification to the Florida Supreme Court, which tells Harris not to certify until it rules.

(3) Nov. 21 Florida Supreme Court rules Harris must extend deadline to Nov. 26 and include hand recounts.

(4) Nov. 22 Bush appeals to U.S. Supreme Court to stop hand recounts.

(5) Dec. 4 U.S. Supreme Court remands case back to Florida Supreme Court demanding clarification of powers of the legislature set by U. …
