Liberal activists and their media allies succeeded in derailing the nomination of Linda Chavez as labor secretary because she once took an illegal immigrant into her home who sometimes did household chores. In a country chock-full of undocumented workers, hers would seem a crime about on par with overstaying one's welcome at a parking meter. Since so much was made of the matter, perhaps the Bush administration will follow up on the issue of illegals.

According to a Time/CNN report, many illegals now are joining unions in this country and they are claiming fights and benefits under U.S. labor and civil-fights laws. The report apparently was sparked by a case where 400 deliverymen in Manhattan, all illegals and all new union recruits, sued for back pay -- and were awarded $3 million.

The unions, it seems, are determined to provide a haven for undocumented workers despite the fact that they are in this country in violation of the law. "We don't care about green cards," according Doug Dority, head of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, quoted in the aforementioned report. …
