Consternation Continues about Clinton Chicanery

Outrage at former president Bill Clinton's flurry of last-minute pardons continued as members of Congress poked into the particulars. Of primary interest is the pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich. His tbrmer wife was a major contributor to the Clinton Foundation, an exclusive club with a $1 million minimum for contributions. Only $450,000 of the Rich-related contribution had surfaced as of this writing, but the financier's former spouse, Denise Rich, has remained concealed like a Taliban housewife behind a Fifth Amendment veil, so more might be revealed.

As Insight went to press, congressional investigators pursued details about donations to the foundation, as well as financial records of Denise Rich, who has given more than $1.3 million to various Democratic causes in recent years. Obviously the question is whether the fugitive -- who renounced his U.S. citizenship and therefore is not allowed to make political contributions -- might have funneled the money to his ex-wife for the donations.

Also, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., was saying he believes Clinton still could be impeached and that he expected the matter to come up in the House, where the process would have to begin. Negative reaction to the Clinton pardons was fairly nonpartisan on Capitol Hill, but there were no immediate indications of who might call for impeachment and Specter didn't name names. Various experts have given differing views of whether a former president even could be subjected to the process, some going so far as to suggest that it is a stupid idea.

While another impeachment seems a long shot, there were clear indications that the former president's path after leaving office wasn't entirely strewn with roses. An angry U.S. attorney in New York City, Mary Jo White, also promised a probe into the possibility that Marc Rich provided the money donated by his ex-wife. …
