Dear Readers,

Did anyone notice in the first "official" presidential debate how eerily similar Al Gore looked to Ronald Reagan, even to physical mannerisms?

What brings this to mind is something The Gipper once said during a presidential debate. The phrase "there you go again" somehow still pops up when watching Honest Al as he winces at character questions raised by George W. Bush. Gore claims he would rather talk about issues than deal with personal attacks on his character. The press seems to play along, and whips Bush for taking the low road (never mind that at the first debate it was moderator Jim Lehrer who raised the character issue by asking Bush to comment).

It'd be funny or much ado about nothing if the underlying issue were not so serious. After all, a fundamental aspect of leadership is, indeed, the character of the man (or woman one day) who will lead our nation. As we've asked before, how else can you gauge a promise-maker than to determine promises kept? …
