Dear Readers,

At the junction of Military Trail and Gun Club Road, history again is being made as surely as it was during the Cuban missile crisis, when the world also waited anxiously for reports from West Palm Beach, now embroiled in another presidential crisis.

What brings this to mind as I sit on the sidewalk in front of the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center is the role of the press in such moments of national and international tension. Watching the newsmen sunning themselves and cracking jokes is like a beach-party wake held on a hot parking lot instead of a funeral parlor. And, as with any family gathering, alliances are telling.

When news broke shortly after 10 a.m. on Nov. 17 that a Tallahassee district judge had ruled in favor of Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris' decision to hold firm on certifying only ballots received within seven days of Election Day, murmurs could be heard about how it didn't matter. Yet, when Al Gore's campaign said it would appeal the Leon County judge's decision, a mood shift could be seen. …
