What's the best thing you've done to ensure things go smoothly on the road?

I used to have a lot of problems with monitor engineers--every song I'd be telling them to do this or do that. Half the time they're not looking at you, and the other half they don't know what you're trying to tell them. Finally, I bought a little 8-channel Mackie mixer, a power amp, and a couple of 2x15 wedge monitors so I could run the monitor mix myself.

What was causing your monitor mix to vary so much?

The engineers would have to change all our settings in order to mix the bands who performed before us. By the time we got onstage, the monitor mix would be all whacked out, and the engineers would end up winging it. …
