One of our aims for Geographical over the past months has been to make the magazine a showplace for stunning and thought-provoking photography. Prompted by the outstanding images brought in by our contributors we decided to run our first ever Photographer of the Year Awards. Our judges, from the Daily Telegraph and Royal Photographic Society, whittled down the 1,000-plus entries to a shortlist of 40, which we displayed on our stand at the Daily Telegraph Adventure Travel Show at Olympia, London, in February. For those who missed the show, we've published a selection of them in this issue along with the winning entries. I hope you enjoy perusing them on pages 28-37.

One of the shortlisted entries highlights the important role of photography in capturing moments in time. Taken by Tony Pletts, it shows a grinning man sporting a new pair of sunglasses in an Indian town. There is nothing particularly unusual about the photograph but the location in which it was taken -- the town of Bhuj in Gujarat -- now has an added poignancy. …
