WHERE AM I?

I am standing in the shady garden of a house built in the Spanish colonial style. It was once the house of a famous writer who lived here for 12 years, writing, among other books, The Green Hills of Africa, but now it is a museum. Another famous resident of this town produced a definitive study in ornithology so it is appropriate that the that the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge is nearby. This was the largest city in its state in the early part of the 19th century.
