Virgin Chief Lands Global Mobile Role

Virgin Mobile has named senior Virgin marketer Brenda Ross as its first international marketing director. Ross will have responsibility for ensuring the brand's consistency worldwide as it expands into new territories including Asia and the US.

The South African-born marketer, who takes on the new role this week, has been managing director of Virgin student.com, Virgin's student web site, since December 1999. She was previously vice-president of marketing for Virgin Drinks in the US, where she worked on Virgin Cola's US launch.

Ross joined Virgin four years ago from TBWA in Cape Town. She was hired by James Kydd, who is now Virgin Mobile's brand director in the UK. Based in London, Ross will report to Virgin's senior management team, headed by Richard Branson.

Virgin is aiming to establish itself as a global mobile virtual network operator through a series of joint venture partnerships. Ross' role will be to ensure the brand's positioning, identity and culture are consistent throughout the territories in which it operates. …
