With this issue, we celebrate 10 years of publishing this journal.

The reprinting of Neil Postman's wonderful prose from our first issue [see "Deus Machina," page 27] is a reminder of our roots as a catalyst for thought about technology and education.

Ironically, a rereading of Postman's article reminds me that the past 10 years have been a time of great hope and modest results for both technology and education. My computer is a bit faster, and my cell phone a bit smaller, but I don't see any technological breakthroughs from the last 10, or even 20 years. Schools have replaced most chalkboards with white boards and added a time slot each week for Internet 101, but I don't see any educational breakthroughs from the last 10, or even 50 years.

Our great scientific minds are engaged in a race to see who can get the most speed from a computer chip, and educators are still running the same race to see who can get the highest SAT scores. …
