Now that laptops can function like portable multitrack studios, it's only fitting that the demo studio shrinks to the size of an electric shaver. The Zoom PS-02 Palmtop Studio ($624) is an amazingly tiny 3-track digital workstation that lets you record and mix songs just about anywhere short of underwater.

Powered by four AAA batteries (or the included AC adapter), the PS-02 provides three audio tracks, 50 onboard effects (including amp and cabinet simulations), and more than 200 bass and drum patterns. (New patterns will soon be available free of charge at www.zoom.co.jp). For processing power, the PS-02 uses 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, and 64MB SmartMedia cards (support for 128MB cards is planned), and the included 8MB card can store up to 100 songs.

Other cool features include auto punch in/out, track bouncing, a tuner, and a built-in microphone that can be used independently or in conjunction with the unit's mini-jack aux in and 1/4" input (which can also be used to plug in an external dynamic mic or a condenser mic routed through a mic preamp). A single 1/4" stereo output jack lets you use Y-cords for playback and transfers to other recording media.

Using the PS-02 is relatively straightforward, though the detailed manual is necessary for navigating the unit's deeper realms. Recording a song can be as easy as switching on the internal mic, pressing the record key, and hitting the start button.
