Dear Readers,

While Rome burns, Nero fiddles. When it comes to protecting the United States, the same could be said for many members in Congress.

What brings this to mind is Kenneth Timmerman's excellent article this week on Russia's secret missile-defense shield. Never heard of it? Neither did we, until some long-classified documents popped up recently that prompted us to dig further and expose the lies told by too many opposed to President George W. Bush's missile-defense plans.

The argument generally goes that should the United States build a system capable of protecting America from attack by nuclear missiles then Russia, and possibly others, would do the same. The nuclear threat would increase, tensions would grow and a new arms race would begin.

Here's the problem: Russia already has a nuclear-missile shield in place, and U.S. officials at the highest levels in government have known about it for decades. Why the American public hasn't been told and, presumably, members of Congress, is anyone's guess. …
