New Group to Educate Consumers on Insurance Industry

In an attempt to improve the posture of the insurance industry with consumers, a new nonprofit organization, The Insurance Education Council of New York (IECNY), has been created from members of seven professional societies, including RIMS New York Chapter.

The group intends to develop and promote educational activities for both providers and consumers of insurance and related services. It is among the first groups attempting to educate the consumers of insurance and to improve recruitment prospects for the industry at both the high school and college levels.

"The purpose is to become a group involved in education for professionals in the industry as well as the consumers outside the industry," says Mina MacFarlane, IECNY's chairperson. "We are trying to get the pros in the business together and talent in high school and college to look at the industry as a viable career path." She said the group will also assist the insurance industry in responding to public needs and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and issues.

The group is one of several that have been formed lately to revitalize the industry's image, which has been tarnished due to its inability to provide clear, readily available information to consumers and a viable career path for young recruits. …
