The Association's Associations: ALTA: Home for Trustees and Advocates

If the many goals of our profession are to be realized they must be translated into policy and supported by members of the community. That is the key role library trustees and advocates play in the library world. Within ALA, trustees and advocates find their home in the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA).

ALTA is moving forward on several fronts to increase both its size and effectiveness.

Advocacy

Library trustees and advocates are the most vocal supporters of libraries in their communities--ready to fight for America's libraries. Working with ALA's Public Information and Washington offices, ALTA is spearheading a campaign to recruit library supporters nationwide to become ALA/ALTA library advocates in an effort to build a network of supporters ready to speak out on behalf of libraries.

To recognize and celebrate the achievements of library advocates, ALTA launched the ALA/ALTA National Advocacy Honor Roll at last year's Annual Conference to recognize the achievements of extraordinary library advocates. Each state identified individuals and groups in their communities who have actively supported library services over the past 100 years. ALTA will also reach out to trustees with special membership campaigns over the next two years.

Education

Education remains at the core of ALTA's mission through ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference programs and events; regional institutes; trustee leadership seminars; a quarterly newsletter; and access to other publications that focus on trustee issues. …
