Washington Trust Co. of Westerly in Rhode Island has named senior vice president Joseph E. LaPlume as head of business services.

Mr. LaPlume was the regional manager in charge of retail banking and commercial lending at the bank's Sweet Meadows, Wakefield, Bonnet Shores, Charlestown, and Richmond branches. Before that he had been the president and chief executive officer of Pierbank in Narragansett.

He has 26 years of banking experience.

Washington Trust Co., a subsidiary of Washington Trust Bancorp in Westerly, has $1.2 billion of assets.


Manufacturers Bank in Los Angeles has elected Takashi Fujishima, an executive of the parent Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. of Tokyo, as its own chairman and CEO.

He succeeded Hidekazu Akimoto, who had been chairman of the $1.2 billion-asset California bank for three years.

Mr. Fujishima, 55, has worked for Sumitomo Mitsui for 31 years. (The company was named Sakura Bank Ltd. until last month, when it merged with Sumitomo Bank of Osaka.) Most recently he was its executive vice president of international and corporate banking.

Before that he had been the head of its Americas division for two years. Still earlier he had been the deputy general manager of the corporate human resources division and head of the investment banking division in London.

Another Sumitomo Mitsui executive, Ryoji Iwanaga, was elected Manufacturers' vice chairman. Mr. Iwanaga, 50, has worked for the company for 27 years. …
