UNISYS Releases New Inter-Library Loan System

Unisys has added an Inter-Library Loan system to its suite of mainframebased PALS library management applications. The Inter-Library Loan module significantly reduces the amount of data entry required when books are moved from one library to another within a consortium that uses the PALS System. Thus, patrons receive requested books faster and librarians spend less time on clerical duties.

Subscribing libraries to a consortium can use the Inter-Library Loan module as a standalone system. Requesting librarians record all needed book and patron information and send it via modem to the library that has the book. The library responds electronically to the request, and, when the book arrives, the requesting librarian can use the information entered previously to complete the transaction.

The new module is even more effective when it is used with the PALS Online Patron Access Catalog (OPAC) and/or Circulation systems. A librarian making a request with an integrated system can use bibliographic and patron information that is automatically down-loaded from the PALS database. …
