I hit 40 in March and looking back, found that all the seminal moments in my career appear to be down to luck. Oris it that I've seized opportunities as they've arisen? The tragedy of life is you have to live it going forward but you only understand it going backwards.

There are many people who have helped me along the way, but in addition, the thing that strikes me about life's successes is that most result from being in the right place at the right time. Whether fate has a plan or they are happy accidents--I've had a bucket load. Bizarrely, some of the most fruitful collisions have been with competitors, or to be a little more polite, my peers.

The introduction to one of our largest clients, Halifax, camevia an introduction from Sir Ernest Hall who I got to know through John Sorrell, who is turn I bumped into by chance at a conference. This chain of events took the best part of six years to come to fruition but was also the catalyst for at least another dozen seminal moments in my career, and in that of Elmwood.

In Madrid last summer, as I shared a plate of egg and chips in a piazza with a couple of friends, a throw-away comment was made that led to our best client acquisition of the year. …
