Dear Readers,

There are a lot of smart people in Washington. At least that's what we keep hearing from toadies and lick-spittals and even from the smarties in both political parties who hire the aforementioned yes men and women.

What brings this to mind is something that's in this week's Last Word column on p. 48 about a criminal class -- namely, the politicians who inhabit the joints up this way. These cats we suppose aren't much different than those that purred and clawed their way to power 100 years ago. And we suppose the press nowadays is no better (or worse) than it was a century ago. In fact, the cynicism among the people probably isn't more or less different than long ago, adjusted for the speed and methods of delivering the news. Nothing much really is different below the thin skins of modern wizardry and new-age wizards.

Yet we get the feeling from readers and visitors to our Website, as well as tourists we spend time with each week, that something is terribly amiss in today's society -- especially in politics and in how the press covers it. …
