The new census reports have provided fodder for a raft of news articles as reporters wrestle the data this way and that to find fresh angles.

A lot of the stories are fairly routine: Some people moved here, some people moved there; some people were born, others got old and some died. But credit is due to the New York Times for coming up with one of the more novel angles so far, reporting that American Indians and buffalo are reclaiming the Great Plains.

The Times quotes a professor as saying that "the experiment on much of the northern Plains with European agricultural settlement may soon be ending." Well, that's certainly true if the government takes over any more grassland and declares it roadless. The article also says that while whites are moving out, "American Indians are coming home, generating the only significant population gains in a wide stretch of the American midsection."

Quite a tale. A few factors should be considered before accepting it whole hog, though. …
