The internet has become one of the most diverse corporate communications tools for business today. That's the general conclusion of a recent sporting goods survey of manufacturers and retailers conducted by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA). While the results of the survey indicate widespread interest in Email, manufacturers and retailers say they also take full advantage of other aspects of the worldwide web. Here are the key findings:

* 94% of manufacturers and retailers use Email

* 86% of both parties conduct business through the Internet

* 85% of manufacturers and 75% of retailers surf the web, searching for websites of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors or sales reps

* About 70% of retailers use the Internet in search of industry and/or competitor news/information

* Almost 80% of manufacturers and 65% or retailers utilize the Internet to access websites for sports industry groups and/or trade associations

* More than 50% of all respondents believe that their website is extremely important in maintaining a competitive edge

* 40% of manufacturers and 46% of retailers purchase products from factories or suppliers over the Internet

* Almost one-third of manufacturers and retailers conduct consumer or customer surveys via the Internet. …
