Travel Portal Hires Carat to [Pound]30m Job

Online Travel Portal, the pan-European venture backed by nine major airlines, is poised to hire Carat International to its [pound]30m global media planning and buying account.

The appointment comes as the business gears up to reveal the portal's brand name at an event next week. According to industry sources, it has been referred to in agency discussions as 'Opodo', but it is not clear whether this has been chosen as the final name.

Carat is understood to have prevailed in a final shoot-out against MindShare for the business. Starcom Motive and OMD UK are thought to have been included in the pitch at an earlier stage.

An Online Travel Portal spokeswoman said that an appointment on its creative task, which is being reviewed out of BMP DDB, is "a few weeks off". She refused to comment on the media work.

Leagas Delaney and one other undisclosed agency are believed to be in the running to pick up the creative business, while Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and BMP DDB have been knocked off the shortlist. …
