In 1990, I had the privilege of participating as an OAS observer in the national elections in Nicaragua. I spent three months in that country as a part of what was to be the largest and most extensive process of guaranteeing democratic elections in which the OAS has ever been involved. During that time I learned that the realities of earnest and ordinary people desirous of political change for the better stood in sharp contrast to what I had imagined, with perhaps a certain cynicism, were their political realities. In this issue of Americas, Louis Werner shares some of his experiences as an observer of the recent elections in Peru, which he found both edifying and humbling.

A dialectic of image and reality, a constant in our daily lives, recurs throughout this issue. With his nontraditional materials--ranging from dust to stones, seeds, wire, and even chocolate syrup--Brazilian artist Vik Muniz compels us to question our assumptions about the very nature of art. …
