To `Victor Kabila' Belongs the Spoils?

One convenience provided by the Internet is that thieves don't even have to leave their lairs to work scams. Among the many such efforts to bilk the greedy making the rounds is a letter from one "Victor Kabila" identifying himself as "the first son of the second wife to Laurent Kabila."

The author of the note reminds the addressee that the aforementioned Laurent, until recently president of the Republic of the Congo, was whacked by a bodyguard back in January.

Victor Kabila quotes from his father's will to the effect that he is heir to $25 million stashed in a strongbox in South Africa. But because of some family disputes Victor, alas, cannot bring the money home to the Congo.

So he is writing to ask that the recipient take it off his hands -- stash it in among company funds or in a private account in exchange for 20 percent of the take. …
