Dear Readers,

We live in a dangerous world. And it is not just our country's enemies on whom we must keep a wary eye but also its friends.

What brings this to mind are myriad issues involving the business of arms, illegal drugs and politics. Consider Ken Timmerman's cover story. There are astonishing details about the development and sale of military weapons by governments that supposedly keep close watch on such inventories but in fact sell to the highest bidder -- sometimes directly but often through loopholes designed to permit international purchases with winks and nods. In an odd way such sales help the bona fide military officials to continue ratcheting up their budgets to combat an increasingly dangerous world -- the more so because of secretly "approved" black-market sales of designer weapons.

The same is true with illegal drugs, whether civilian-driven by narcoterrorists, state-sponsored cartels or military-industrial complexes that don't necessarily condone drug sales and usage but don't do much to crack down lest their leaders be embarrassed. …
