Breaks the barrier between gay male and lesbian dance music

DJ Kimberly S. likes it both ways. No, not like that--she's definitely a lesbian. But in the segregated world of dance music--where certain DJs play for the men and certain DJs play for the women--Kimberly S. (or Spalding) is big with both.

"For the women I play a diverse set--anything from hip-hop and R&B to very vocally flavored house music, disco, and funk," says Spalding, who spun in Palm Springs, Calif., this year for both the female-favorite Dinah Shore Weekend and for the male-dominated White Party. "For the boys I start light, then go for a progressive tribal sound, flavored with vocal anthems, with a lot of crescendos and climaxes to keep the energy high."

Off the circuit, Spalding spins at both Los Angeles's Girl Bar and the Factory. And along the way she's bridged a gap between some gay men and lesbians. "I haven't really witnessed a division [between the fans]; I think I've seen a crossover instead," Spalding says. …
