Chairman

John G. Clemons, ABC, APR, is vice president of internal communication at Nextel Communications, Inc., headquartered in Reston, Va.

He was formerly director of internal communication for Ameritech, Chicago, Ill., a Fortune 100 global communications services provider acquired by SBC Communications Inc.

Clemons has spoken at IABC international conferences, has served on IABC's multiculturalism committee, and was a member of the 1996 international conference planning committee. He has served on the IABC executive board for more than six years and in 1997-98 was appointed a trustee for the IABC Research Foundation.

Dually accredited by IABC and PRSA, Clemons has received numerous communication awards.

In 1997, IABC/Washington (D.C.) named him Communicator of the Year. Clemons was vice president of communication of IABC/Tampa and executive vice president of IABC/Atlanta.

Clemons has a bachelor's degree in news journalism from Syracuse University.

Vice Chair

Annette Martell, ABC, is a consultant for William M. Mercer Limited in Toronto. She has worked with not-for-profit, financial services, corporate and agency-based organizations during her 15 years in the communication field, including acting as part of the senior management team at Acadia University of Wolfville, N.S.

Before joining Acadia, Martell was divisional vice president of communication, government and industry relations with the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

An active IABC volunteer, she has served as a director-at-large on the IABC executive board, on various international committees, and as president of IABC/Atlantic Canada, director of Canada District 2 and blue ribbon panel judge for the international Gold Quill competition.

A graduate of Mount Saint Vincent University's bachelor of public relations (co-op) program and a recipient of Acadia University's arts degree, she earned the ABC designation in 1992.

Past Chairman

Charles Pizza is principal of the New Orleans-based public relations agency P.R. PR, Inc., and a former assistant system operator of the PR & Marketing Forum for CompuServe. P.R. PR, Inc., is the Louisiana affiliate of Edelman Public Relations Worldwide and a member of the Phoenix Network of independent PR agencies.

Pizzo served two terms as a director-at-large and as vice chairman and chairman on the international executive board and was past president of IABC/New Orleans.

He frequently speaks on such topics as strategies for online communicators, media relations online, technology for entrepreneurs, and labor relations. Pizzo has written for PRSA's national magazine, Tactics, and served as a member of the editorial board and columnist for Interactive PR, a national U.S. technology publication for communicators. He is a member of PRSA and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America.

Directors at Large

Shelley J. Griewahn is a consultant in Arlington, Va. Formerly she was practice leader for the communication unit of Towers Perrin in Rosslyn, Va., where she was responsible for strategic planning, project management and implementation in a variety of areas.

Active in IABC since 1981, Griewahn has been a member of two chapters and served on the U.S. District 3 board. She has held a number of leadership positions in IABC/Washington, including president. She also served on the IABC/Philadelphia board.

In her tenure in Washington, a "twinning" program, connecting IABC/Washington and IABC/London as twin chapters, was instituted.

Griewahn received her bachelor's degree in communication from The College of Wooster.

Stephanie M. Griffiths is the senior partner of Material Assistance, Johannesburg, SA, an organisational development and applied communication practice.

Before founding Material Assistance 10 years ago, Griffiths worked in communication, human resources and organisational development with the Star, South Africa's leading daily newspaper, and edited various consumer and financial journals within the Barlow Rand Group. …
