Leadership Article: Solid As a Rock

I was impressed with Celia Rocks's article in the January/February 2001 issue of PM (Workshop department, "Learn to Be a Leader: A Resolution for the New Millennium"). My interest in "leadership," as opposed to just "management," goes back a long way. It's been kind of a career quest that I learned more about from life than from college.

For me, the issue has been how to go beyond getting people to do the job to getting the job done by people who want to get it done. It has to do with the emotions--inspiration and commitment, loyalty and aspiration--in addition to perspiration. It has a lot to do with motivation and not much to do with obedience. It's the "soft" side of management that, paradoxically, is the hardest part of it. Celia Rocks's "Ten Ways" was right on, so I thought.

Then I read Peter Burchard's letter in the May 2001 PM ("A Grievous Article") and rushed to reread Rocks's written assessment. …
