Before I retreat into the final year of exams, a 10,000-word dissertation and double Vodka and Red Bulls at [pound]2 a shot, I would like to use this opportunity to make an observation.

My placement year at a marketing communications agency has met my expectations and given me the chance to play a part in a diverse, exciting and competitive industry that's not renowned for providing easy student access. All students are academically sound, but it is experience that sets us apart. Michael Owen is only the player he is today because he was given a football at an early age. There is a whole generation with ideas out there, so why not start them early?

I've been fully immersed in an inspring environment that has allowed me to learn and develop both strategically and creatively, working alongside some of the industry's greatest talent. The agency recognised the fact that young people can bring fresh ideas and approaches to a dynamic and growing industry. Far from being handcuffed to the photocopier, I've experienced the diversity of a multidisciplined agency, learned how to handle clients and even been thrown into the madness and excitement of pitches. …
