THREE YEARS INTO PUBLISHING THIS MAGAZINE WE FELT IT WAS TIME for a great birthday present. So in your hands is both our third anniversary issue and a girt: a polished and invigorated BOOK. It's also--not coincidentally--the best issue we've ever produced, from its intimate portraits to its look at modern muckrakers to a story by one of the sharpest voices in contemporary fiction. You'll find all the elements you've enjoyed in the past, plus many of the "new-and-improved" variety. Readers have often expressed their delight in finding a magazine that covers the reading life and is full rich photography and illustration--but there have been complaints about text readability and the glare sometimes created by our glossy paper. So while you'll find terrific stories and art in this issue, we hope you'll appreciate the new typefaces we've developed and new matte paper that's easier on the eyes.

There are some structural changes, too. For instance, Kathleen Odean's column on children's literature, formerly known as NEVER TOO SOON, along with Kristin Kloberdanz's regular stories on teen reading trends, now comprise an entire TOTS TO TEENS section: In addition to stories on individuals and trends in those fields, you'll find related book recommendations. …
